After a remarkable comeback in his NASCAR career, Kyle Larson is now setting his sights on a new challenge – the Indianapolis 500. The 2021 Cup champion recently finished fifth in NASCAR’s preseason exhibition at the Los Angeles Coliseum, but his focus has now shifted towards his first attempt at the iconic open-wheel race. Larson’s participation in the upcoming test at the Phoenix tri-oval will serve as a rookie evaluation for his team, Arrow McLaren, as they prepare for the upcoming IndyCar season.

A Team Committed to Success

Arrow McLaren has assembled a group of experienced professionals to support Larson in his Indy 500 program. Every team member working with Larson at the test will be the same group assigned for his race in Indianapolis. However, one notable absence will be veteran race engineer Mike Pawlowski, who recently joined the team for this one-off effort. Pawlowski brings extensive experience from his previous stints at AJ Foyt Racing, Andretti Global, and Chip Ganassi Racing. Despite this change, Tony Kanaan, the 2013 Indy 500 winner and current Sporting Director for Arrow McLaren, will be present to provide coaching and feedback to Larson.

As with any outdoor event, the threat of rain could potentially impact the upcoming test in Phoenix. While there are no plans to reschedule if rain disrupts the test, Larson remains focused on making the most of his limited opportunities on track. The only other planned on-track running at this time is the Indy 500 Open Test in April. Larson is no stranger to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, having completed all three phases of the Rookie Orientation Programme in October, where he posted an impressive fastest lap at 217.898 mph.

As Larson prepares for his IndyCar debut, he acknowledges the importance of the upcoming tests and the subsequent race in April. Despite the additional demands on his time, he views the preparation work as an exciting challenge. Larson is accustomed to a busy schedule and believes that the transition to IndyCar will not feel drastically different. However, he recognizes the need for extra focus and commitment on the IndyCar side of his racing career to ensure a successful performance. He expresses confidence in receiving all the necessary data and information to study, with the belief that the additional laps will ultimately contribute to a smooth and successful experience come May.

Larson’s aspirations go beyond the Indy 500 as he aims to become the first driver since Kurt Busch in 2014 to attempt the “Memorial Day Weekend Double.” This grueling challenge involves competing in both the Indy 500 and the 600-mile Cup race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on the same day. While the feat has been attempted by several notable drivers throughout history, Larson hopes to make his mark and join the ranks of those who have pushed the limits of endurance and versatility in motorsport.

A Journey Begins

As Larson embarks on this new chapter in his racing career, the road ahead may be challenging, but he is determined to make the most of this opportunity. With a supportive team, valuable testing sessions, and a steadfast commitment to preparation, Larson is poised to leave his mark on the prestigious Indianapolis 500. Fans await his debut in the world of IndyCar, curious to see how his skills and adaptability from his NASCAR success will translate to open-wheel racing. This is just the beginning of Kyle Larson’s journey, and only time will tell the heights he will reach in his pursuit of greatness.
