The African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in the Ivory Coast has been marred by the poor behavior of journalists, leading the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to take action. CAF has issued a new set of guidelines and tightened media access after consulting with local police. The actions of some journalists at AFCON have been an unhappy subplot, with incidents of abuse, fighting, and even near-nudity making headlines from the press box.

In response to the escalating misconduct, CAF has taken steps to reduce what they consider unprofessional and unbecoming behavior. The football governing body met with the Local Organizing Committee and the police to address the situation and find solutions. While acknowledging the passion and love for football, CAF expects journalists to uphold professional standards.

CAF has made it clear that there will be severe consequences for journalists who engage in unprofessional behavior. Any media practitioner involved in “wild celebrations and abuses [of] other media colleagues” will have their accreditation removed. Additionally, the use of vulgar language against coaches, players, or peers in media areas will result in the withdrawal of accreditation. CAF has also imposed a strict ban on live streaming in the mixed zone, the use of drones, and unauthorized media filming within the stadium.

Throughout the tournament, there have been numerous incidents of journalists crossing the line. After Ghana’s 2-2 draw with Mozambique, accredited journalists shouted abuse at players in the mixed zone. Former Ghana coach Chris Hughton was also heckled by journalists following an altercation with a supporter in the team hotel. Reporters barracked the Ivory Coast players after their 4-0 defeat by Equatorial Guinea, while clashes between media packs were witnessed during the Senegal-Guinea and Morocco-South Africa matches.

Perhaps the most shocking incident occurred during the Ivorian victory over Senegal when an accredited journalist engaged in a near-naked dance in the media tribune. This behavior was captured on camera and circulated widely. The International Sports Press Association expressed their distress in a statement, criticizing the transformation of media workspaces into a “boxing ring” or even a “dancefloor” hosted by media badge holders.

The troubling behavior of journalists has prompted CAF to impose strict regulations on media access. During Nigeria’s quarterfinal against Angola, only a maximum of 250 journalists were admitted to the media tribune, and even photographers’ access was limited. These measures aim to control the conduct of the media and prevent any further incidents of unprofessional behavior.

It is crucial for journalists covering such prestigious tournaments to maintain professionalism and respect for the game. The behavior of a few individuals shouldn’t overshadow the hard work and dedication of the majority. The media plays a significant role in shaping public opinion and narrative surrounding football, and it is essential that they uphold ethical standards.

Journalists have a responsibility to report accurately, fairly, and without bias. They should prioritize the fundamental values of journalism, such as truth, integrity, and professionalism. By adhering to these principles, journalists can contribute to the positive portrayal of the sport and foster a healthy environment for athletes, coaches, and fans.

CAF’s new guidelines and tightened media access are a step in the right direction. However, it is up to journalists to take responsibility for their actions and embrace professionalism. By doing so, they can restore the integrity of their profession and ensure that future tournaments are remembered for the excitement on the pitch, rather than the misbehavior of those in the press box.
